Product development workbook FAQ

Last updated: November 2026

What do founders ask most before developing a product?

Founders most often ask how to score an idea, what a tech pack is, how to find suppliers, what help costs and whether to hire a consultant or a firm. The 43answers below come from Cydney Mar's published method and free tools, grouped by topic.

The workbook and the roadmap

What is a product development workbook?

A product development workbook is a guided set of questions and worksheets that helps you think an idea through before you spend money on it. Cydney Mar offers a free one called From Idea to Income, which lets you score your idea in about five honest minutes and map your path to launch.

Is the From Idea to Income workbook free?

Yes. Cydney Mar offers the From Idea to Income workbook as a free download on cydneymar.com. It is the same workbook offered to members of the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business through her consultation program, and it is designed as a self-guided first step before any paid work.

Where do I download the workbook?

You download the workbook from the program page on cydneymar.com, linked from the workbook buttons throughout this site. The download asks for your email address so the file can be sent to you. If a link does not work, use the contact page on cydneymar.com to ask for a copy.

What is the difference between the workbook and the Product Development Roadmap?

The workbook helps you score your idea and decide whether to move forward. The Product Development Roadmap shows the step-by-step pathway from idea to samples to production, what to do and avoid at each stage, and what makes a product ready to scale. Many founders use the workbook first, then the roadmap.

How do I get the Product Development Roadmap?

The Product Development Roadmap is offered free on cydneymar.com. You enter your email address and first name to get instant access. The page says your inbox is respected, with no spam and the option to unsubscribe at any time. A link to that page sits on the roadmap guide on this site.

Is a workbook better than a product development book?

They do different jobs. Books on product development explain theory and the process in general. A workbook asks you to answer questions about your own idea, your customer and your costs, so you finish with notes you can act on. Many founders read for background and use a workbook to make actual decisions.

Scoring your product idea

How do I score my product idea?

Rate how ready you are at each stage of getting a product made: clarity on what it is and who it is for, prototypes, suppliers, costs and margins, production readiness, and a launch plan. The worksheet on this site scores those six stages from 1 to 5, and the free workbook from Cydney Mar walks you through a fuller scoring exercise.

What counts as a good score for a product idea?

There is no universal passing mark. A self-score is most useful for showing where you are weakest, not for proving an idea will sell. On this site, the lowest-rated stages are flagged as the place to focus next. Treat any score as an estimate and a planning aid, never as a guarantee of sales or success.

What's the quickest way to validate a product idea?

Start by writing down exactly what the product is, who it is for and what problem it solves, then check your costs against a realistic selling price. The Product Clarity stage of the Concept-to-Reality Pathway comes first for this reason. Clear answers there make every later step, from samples to suppliers, cheaper to get right.

Should I score my idea before making a prototype?

Yes. The Product Development Roadmap from Cydney Mar names jumping into sampling without clarity as one of the most common reasons product ideas stall. Scoring first shows whether you know what you are making and who it is for, so your prototype budget goes toward the right samples instead of rework.

What if my idea scores low?

A low score usually means you have not had a map yet, not that the idea is wrong. Cydney Mar puts it plainly: it is rarely the idea, it is not knowing which step comes next. Use the low-scoring stages as your to-do list, then rescore once you have answers.

Does the scoring worksheet on this site save my answers?

No. The score worksheet and margin check run in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored by this site. If you want to keep your results, write them down or print the page. The downloadable workbook is a better place to keep a lasting record of your thinking.

How the Concept-to-Reality Pathway works

What is the Concept-to-Reality Pathway?

The Concept-to-Reality Pathway is the step-by-step method Cydney Mar uses to take a product from idea to shelf. It has six stages: Product Clarity, Right Prototypes, The Right Suppliers, Cost and Margins, Production-Ready, and Launch and Scale. Each stage is meant to move the product closer to market.

Why does the order of product development steps matter?

Steps taken in the wrong order cost time and money. Cydney Mar writes that most founders do not fail because the idea is bad, but because they take the right steps in the wrong order, such as choosing suppliers on guesswork or ignoring margins until it is too late. The Pathway puts clarity and costing before production.

Is there a product launch framework I can follow?

Yes. The final stage of the Concept-to-Reality Pathway, Launch and Scale, covers taking your product to market through retail, direct-to-consumer or TV, and growing from there. It rests on the five earlier stages, so a launch plan is built on a finished, costed and production-ready product.

What is a product development strategy?

A product development strategy is the plan for what you will make, for whom, at what cost and price, with which suppliers, and how you will bring it to market. Cydney Mar covers this through product development, business strategy, and positioning and path to market, including pricing, offer design and a plan to reach your first hundred buyers.

How long does it take to go from idea to product?

Timelines are not published on this site and they vary by product, supplier and sampling rounds. What raises the timeline most is rework, which is why the Pathway focuses on getting the right prototypes and a clear tech pack early. Ask Cydney Mar about your specific product through the contact page on cydneymar.com.

Can the Pathway help me build a minimum viable product?

Yes, if your product is a physical consumer product. The early stages of the Pathway, Product Clarity and Right Prototypes, are about defining what you are making and developing the right samples first, which is the heart of a first viable version. Cydney Mar also helps founders create a first mini collection before a full collection.

Tech packs, samples and suppliers

What is a tech pack?

A tech pack is the technical document that tells a factory exactly how to make your product. Cydney Mar describes a clear, professional tech pack as the difference between a sample that is right the first time and months of expensive back-and-forth. Writing production-ready tech packs that factories understand is central to her work.

What format should a tech pack be in?

There is no single required format, but tech packs are commonly shared as a PDF or spreadsheet with one section per topic: flat sketches, measurements, materials, construction notes, colors, labels and packaging. Ask your factory which format it prefers. The tech pack guide on this site lists the sections founders most often need.

Do I need a tech pack before contacting a factory?

It helps a great deal. Without one, a factory has to guess at details, and guesses lead to wrong samples and repeated rounds. Cydney Mar includes tech packs, sampling, sourcing and costing in her product development work, so founders can approach suppliers with specifications that are clear from the start.

How many samples will I need?

It depends on the product and how clear your specifications are. The Right Prototypes stage of the Pathway aims to develop the right samples and cut costly rework, which means fewer rounds when the tech pack is clear. Cydney Mar does not publish a fixed number; ask about your product during a strategy call.

How do I find a reliable supplier for my product?

Judge suppliers on quality, communication and reliability, the three criteria named in The Right Suppliers stage of the Pathway. The Product Development Roadmap warns against choosing suppliers based on guesswork. Cydney Mar includes sourcing in her product development work and welcomes introductions from excellent mills and factories.

What does production-ready mean?

Production-ready means your specifications and systems are final enough for consistent manufacturing. In the Concept-to-Reality Pathway, this stage comes after prototypes, suppliers, and costs are settled, so the factory can make the same product correctly every time rather than reinterpreting it order by order.

Costs, margins and pricing

How much does a product development consultant cost?

Prices for Cydney Mar are not published on this site, so contact her through cydneymar.com for current details. Across the field, consultant fees generally depend on scope, product category and how many stages you need help with. Members of the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business can book a complimentary 60-minute strategy session.

How do I calculate my product margin?

Subtract your unit cost from your selling price, then divide by the selling price. For example, a product that costs 10 to make and sells for 25 has a gross margin of 60 percent. The margin check on the score page does this math and rejects empty, negative or zero figures.

Why should I think about margins before production?

Because a product that sells at a loss gets worse as it scales. The Cost and Margins stage of the Pathway is about building for real profit and scalability and learning to calculate costs properly. The roadmap from Cydney Mar lists ignoring margins until it is too late as a common founder mistake.

Can I get help with a business plan for a grant application?

Yes. Cydney Mar offers business plans and cost structures strong enough for grant and funding applications, along with diagnostics to find where a business is leaking opportunity. For CCIB members, this deeper support is often grant-eligible according to her program page.

Is the strategy call free?

Members of the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business can book a complimentary 60-minute Concept-to-Reality Strategy Session. For everyone else, check the current booking details through the contact page on cydneymar.com, since pricing is not published on this site.

Consultants, firms and alternatives

Should I hire a product development consultant or a product development firm?

A consultant like Cydney Mar guides you personally through each stage while you own the decisions. A product development firm or company generally provides a team that does more of the work in-house. Founders who want an experienced guide and to learn the process tend to fit a consultant; those who want to hand off execution may prefer a firm.

What does a new product development consultant do?

A new product development consultant helps you turn an idea into a manufacturable, sellable product. Cydney Mar covers defining the product, prototypes and samples, sourcing suppliers, costing and margins, tech packs and production readiness, and launch through retail, direct-to-consumer or TV.

How do I choose a product development consultant?

Look for direct experience taking products to market in your category and channel, a clear process you can follow, and honest answers about cost and timing. Cydney Mar cites 45+ years in fashion and product and $300M+ in global retail, TV and direct-to-consumer sales. Ask any consultant you consider for the same kinds of facts.

Can I develop a product on my own without a consultant?

Yes, many founders start on their own, and the free workbook and roadmap are built for that. The risk is guesswork on samples, suppliers and margins, which the roadmap names as common reasons ideas stall. Some founders work alone until a specific stage, such as a tech pack or factory choice, then get expert help.

Which kinds of products does Cydney Mar focus on?

Cydney Mar most wants to guide founders of consumer products for retail, TV and direct-to-consumer brands. Over her career she has created fashion, jewelry, bath bombs, scented candles, homewares, paper products, car accessories and her own vitamin and supplement brand, Cydney Mar Wellness.

Is a consultant right for an electronics or engineering-heavy product?

Ask first. The categories Cydney Mar lists from her career are consumer goods such as fashion, jewelry, candles, homewares and supplements. If your product depends heavily on electronics or mechanical engineering, ask any consultant or firm, including her, about direct experience with that category before you commit.

Who it is for and getting started

Who is the Concept-to-Reality Pathway for?

It is for founders and people starting product-based businesses who have an idea but want expert guidance and to avoid costly guesswork. It also fits founders stuck on a tech pack, sample, factory or pricing, and people building a program or service around their expertise.

What experience does Cydney Mar have?

Cydney Mar has more than 45 years in fashion and product and over $300M in retail, TV and direct-to-consumer sales. She sold her own collections on QVC for more than 15 years in 8 countries, with more than 800 hours of live television, and designed the first Boutique Collection for Cirque du Soleil.

Where is Cydney Mar based?

Cydney Mar is based in Montreal, Canada, and works with clients worldwide according to her company page. She runs Cydney Mar Consulting, an Indigenous-owned product development firm, alongside her vitamin brand. She is Nlaka’pamux, and supporting Indigenous founders is close to her heart.

What is the best first step if I have a product idea?

Score your idea first, then talk to someone experienced. Download the free From Idea to Income workbook or use the score worksheet on this site, note your weakest stages, and bring those notes to a conversation with Cydney Mar. Her own advice is that the best first step is a conversation.

How do I contact Cydney Mar?

Use the contact page on cydneymar.com, which every contact button on this site links to. From there you can book a call or reach her directly to discuss your idea or a project. Potential partner vendors, such as mills and factories, are also welcome to connect.

How should I prepare for a product strategy call?

Bring a short description of your product and customer, your self-score across the six Pathway stages, any sketches or samples, rough cost figures and your top three questions. The strategy call preparation page on this site has a printable checklist so you can use every minute of the conversation well.

Can Cydney Mar help with a program or service instead of a physical product?

Yes. Her program page says that whether you are bringing something to a shelf or packaging your knowledge into a program or service, the steps are the same. Her strongest focus remains consumer products for retail, TV and direct-to-consumer brands.

Are there free consultations for Indigenous entrepreneurs?

Yes. Cydney Mar offers free product development and business consultations for members of the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business, including a complimentary 60-minute Concept-to-Reality Strategy Session and the From Idea to Income workbook. Details are on the CCIB page of cydneymar.com.
